Thursday Thoughts

1. Yesterday I had the day off, so I scheduled a hot stone massage with a Groupon I had purchased last week. Yup, I’m the genius who got a hot stone massage in the middle of the afternoon when it was 95 degrees outside.

2. I boozefaced more than I had wanted to last night. The two cocktails from Merchant were sta-rong!

This is the Aviation Cocktail – fun glass!
The Regret and the Aviation Cocktail – 1. Angie – 0. Water is my bff today.

3. Tonight is Wine and Recipe night; the theme is inspired by the porn book Fifty Shades of Gray (that I have not read and probably will never). We’re all supposed to bring food that is sexy or seductive. I am bringing a wrap that includes asparagus and avocado, which are both considered “sexy” foods but only because they look like mens’ body parts.

4. Between my massage and my haircut yesterday, I stopped by Trader Joe’s to load up on bars for the trip; Luna bars, Clif bars, and Larabars all found their way into my basket, as did sunflower seed butter, salted creamy peanut butter, almonds, and trail mix.

5. Brody’s Chive shirt arrived! He opened the package when we got home at 11:30pm last night and had a big goofy grin on his face.

6. There is a Color Run in Milwaukee at the end of August that I want to do – they look like so much fun!

7. One of the kids I nanny for tested positive for Whooping Cough. The results came back yesterday afternoon when I was over there. That morning we went to the gym so the boys could play basketball and they went to the park with a friend, his brother and mom. Oops. Obviously I was also exposed to it. Normally this would not concern me, but with us leaving for Europe on Tuesday, I a) do not want to have Whooping Cough in Europe, and b) do not want to expose people to it in airports and on the plane. Without even seeing me, my doctor wrote me a prescription for the z-pack.

8. Our CSA this week included sugar snap peas and a beet (which will be juiced). It stinks that the weather is so dry – we haven’t been getting a ton of stuff because nothing is growing. We need RAIN!!!!

Do you get massages regularly?
Have you ever had Whooping Cough?
Do you want to do the Color Run with me?

What I Ate Wednesday

Yesterday would’ve been a much more interesting day for my What I Ate Wednesday, but I failed to bring my camera or iPad to school yesterday to take a photo of my lunch. But I think the point is to show just a normal day of food and to share food ideas and recipes.

Last night, when I was planning my meals though 4:15pm, I actually took into account Jenn’s monthly theme of an extra serving of veggies. At 9:30pm, I felt lazy and considered making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich which would’ve meant no veggies so far in my day. Thanks to Jenn for being a positive influence on my food choices today!

After a big dinner meal, like so big you have a food baby, do you ever wake up starving the next morning? I do. Even in the middle of the night I woke up to intense hunger pangs. I also woke up to Moose licking my face and Frankie’s panting; both behaviors were due to thunderstorms. Needless to say, I couldn’t wait to eat my overnight oats on my drive to school, so I adjusted my morning meals.

Breakfast #1 @ 6:15am
I have been thinking of the Trader Joe’s fig jam in my refrigerator since I bought it on Saturday. Let me tell you – it paired perfectly with goat cheese on toast. Mmmm…

Breakfast #2 @ 7:15am
Half of my overnight oats were consumed during my drive. Into the oats I mixed very cherry blend from TJ’s, plain unsweetened fat free yogurt, coconut milk, chia seeds, and honey. I swear I had a picture from Tuesday that I took in my car with my oats in my lap, but it is no where to be found.

Snack @ 9:15am
I finished my oats at my desk while doing work.

Lunch @ 12:45pm

Putting together this salad was totally worth it. I love cold roasted vegetables on a salad! My “dressing” was horseradish hummus and cottage cheese. For dessert, I had a few mini-chocolate bars (Mr. Goodbars are currently my favorite.).

Snack @ 4:15pm
Copp’s had these bars on sale for 50% off, so I took a chance. Although all of the unpronounceable ingredients freaks me out a little, I still bought it and obviously ate it.

It was okay but tasted pretty fake. I think it had pretty good stats: 190 calories, 15 grams of protein, 4 grams of fiber, 11 grams of sugar, and 26 grams of carbs.

Pre-dinner snack @ 7:00pm
Brody was at a social gathering, and I knew we wouldn’t be eating until after 8:00pm. Instead of going for the pita chips in my pantry, I had some almonds and chocolate chips. Whole Foods had their Synergy kombucha on sale 2/$5, so I stocked up on four. This strawberry flavor is one of my favorites.

Dinner @ 8:30pm

Once that goat cheese passed by my lips at breakfast, I had to have more, and since Brody doesn’t care for it, I knew there was only one meal that would work: pizza. My personal pizza on naan included Di Salvo’s pizza sauce, spinach, roasted red pepper, goat cheese, five cheese Italian blend, and Garlic Gold Italian blend. I ate half and will eat the rest tomorrow for lunch. After dinner, I also had some frozen mango.

And that’s all she wrote…or ate.

Have a nice evening!

Twelve Miler and TJ’s

Twelve miles, check.
Green grapes and trail mix, check.
Shower, check.
Capitol, check.
Trader Joe’s, check.
Gas for car (least favorite chore…see yesterday’s post), check.
Relieve my bladder for the first time since 10:10am, check.
*Note: The last check happened at 3:15pm. (TMI?)

Dehydrated much? That is scary for me. I was aware of the time that had gone by, but I didn’t feel the urge to go and it wasn’t especially convenient. Anyways, I am home on my couch chugging water like it’s my job.

The run happened. Mel’s hubby, Tim, joined us, so I was in good company again. The wind was fierce at times, but it wasn’t cold. The sun was shining, the flowers starting to emerge from the ground, and the two GUs I had were delicious (espresso and mandarin orange). Unfortunately, Mel and I both felt “creaky” (her term). My lower back tightened up towards the end and my knees were just a little achy. I have considered taking ibuprofen during my longer runs to reduce the inflammation but need to do some research. I have heard it is not good to take pain killers while running, but my neighbor said she needed to during her marathon. Anyways, it feels great to check the run off the list.

Sadly, I polished off the last tablespoon of Trader Joe’s sunflower seed butter this morning and needed to restock. You know how I love grocery shopping! Besides the sunflower butter, I also picked up salted creamy pb, frozen mango chunks, yogurt spinach and kale dip, and green juice for myself. I also picked up some goodies for my foodie penpal this month. 🙂

The green juice disappeared (in my belly) on my drive home; it was sweeter than I had expected but hit the spot and kept my hunger at bay until I got home. The minute I walked in the door, after I finally used the ladies room, I dug into the yogurt spinach and kale dip. Holy yum! It tastes almost like spinach artichoke dip. The pita chips were the perfect vehicle for this dip to be enjoyed (because I was too lazy and hungry to cut up veggies). I HIGHLY recommend this stuff.

On the agenda for the rest of the day? Maybe a nap and maybe some grading. Tonight Brody and I are meeting up with a friend of mine from high school and her husband. We are heading back to Natt Spil (the bartender recognized us last time!) for drinks and dinner. I am excited to try their food.

That is all for now – enjoy your Saturday afternoon and evening!
