I am short and have short (but proportionate) legs, but I walk fast. In college, my sorority sisters were all taller than me, and when we walked to class, I learned to move quickly to keep up. As a teacher, I move throughout the hallways as if I’m on a mission. It always seems like there are copies to be made, grading to be done, or a bathroom break to finally take. I can honestly say that from 7:30am to 3:30pm, besides a thirty minute lunch break, I am constantly on the go. Seriously. Although teachers get a lot of crap for the breaks they get, the breaks are necessary for maintaining their sanity and passion.
Moving so quickly through each day is not very healthy. This spring break, I have taken the time off to slow down, so all of the things I am thankful for today all support my intention of s l o w i n g d o w n.
Madison in the Spring
Before meeting Brody for lunch yesterday, I had about ten minutes of free time. I found a bench across from the capitol. After organizing my coupons, I just sat and people watched, admired the tulips and budding trees, and soaked in the sun.
Lunch with People I Care About
I sometimes envy people (i.e. my husband) who eat out for lunch every day. How nice it must be to leave the office and take a mental and physical break. I also just like the idea of meeting people for lunch, so I try to schedule a few lunch dates over my spring break every year. Yesterday, Brody and I ate at Red Sushi.
Tomorrow I’ll be meeting a few friends possibly at Daisy’s Cafe and Cupcakery. I have eaten there for breakfast before, but their lunch items look delicious. Of course I will be eating a cupcake as well; I need to prepare my body with sugar for my sixteen mile run on Saturday.
I like a good drink, whether that drink is alcoholic or not. Michelangelo’s on State Street makes a mean skim iced mocha. Plopping myself down on a unstable cafe table on their patio, I allowed myself a sip of the chocolately goodness after grading each essay. Unfortunately, the iced mocha was gone before my essays were.
Although it takes longer, I choose not to tape off edges and trim when painting rooms. I prefer to do everything by hand, and if I can toot my own horn, I am damn good at it. It helps that I absolutely LOVE the color Brody and I picked out.
I know many (most) of you do not get a spring break anymore, but if you’re on the go and speed through your day like I normally do, take a little bit of time to slow down and appreciate something little in your life.
What are you thankful for today?
